SKIP of NY Helps New York’s Sickest Children

Over 800,000 children in New York suffer from autism, developmental disabilities, birth defects or the effects of disabling accidents. SKIP (Sick Kids [Need] Involved People) acts as a free medical concierge, connecting children to the services and equipment they need to get well and live at home rather than in hospitals or institutions.

SKIP transforms the lives of the 5,000 medically vulnerable children it helps each year. And, in an average year, SKIP saves over $50 million in public expense.

The award-winning SKIP is the only 501(c)(3) of its kind in New York. Since its launch in 1983, it has helped over 25,000 children.

Please explore our website to learn more about what we do and whom we serve – the courageous children and their families who struggle each day to find a way forward.

Dear SKIP of New York Family:

In light of recent events, we at SKIP would like to take the opportunity to reaffirm that we value and embrace all our staff, families, and community members. We are collectively heartbroken and upset by the death of George Floyd and so many other unnecessary deaths and injustices felt by people of color and others. It is difficult to find the right words to adequately express our sentiments and concerns with racial injustices, health disparities and immeasurable loss of life from violence. What we can do is to offer support and to focus on hope, resiliency, and our commitment to creating an ever better environment here at SKIP and continuing to strive for a better world for all. We recognize we do not have all the answers and there is work to be done, but our hearts and ears are open, and we remain ready and willing to listen and respond.

SKIP Data Security Incident

SKIP of New York (“SKIP”) is providing notice of a data security incident that may affect the privacy of certain individuals’ protected health information and/or personal information.

SKIP discovered a possible loss of records and audio-visual material that impacted systems that support SKIP’s obligations under the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (“HIPAA”). We worked with our internal experts and our counsel to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident and remediate the situation.

SKIP takes the privacy and security of the data entrusted to us seriously. Unfortunately, the investigation disclosed that certain audio-visual records, in the form of CD-ROMS, conducted with, and approved by, the individual’s parents or legal guardians, which shows a brief moment of time in the client’s daily activities, were lost by the contracted moving company, when SKIP moved from its prior office location on West 26th Street, to its current location at 318 West 39th Street, NY, NY. We want to assure you that we are taking this incident extremely seriously, and we deeply regret any inconvenience this incident may have caused you.

Upon information and belief, the CD-ROMs were completely destroyed by the moving company, as per their ordinary protocols. Nevertheless, the possibility exists that the moving company lost the CD-ROMs. SKIP, based upon information and belief, determined that the only identifiers that appeared on the CD-ROMs were the images and behavior (at a point in time) of the individual, and the individual’s first name and surname. We are not aware of any misuse of personal information or protected health information as a result of this incident.

SKIP has established a dedicated toll-free number for individuals to contact with questions or concerns. If you have any questions regarding this incident, please contact the dedicated assistance line at which can be reached at 833-292-1532 (toll free), Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST, excluding U.S. holidays. If members have any questions about other issues unrelated to this incident or are being denied care, please call the SKIP office number at 212-268-5999 for assistance, or email us at info@skipofny.org.

SKIP has also, pursuant to federal regulations, notified the appropriate federal agency of this breach. Further information can be provided at https//ocrportal.hhs.gov/ocr/breach.

SKIP continues to take steps to implement additional data security enhancements and safeguards to better protect against similar events in the future. We remain committed to safeguarding the privacy and security of information we collect in providing services to our members.
